January 17th was the 244th anniversary of the Patriots' victory over the British at Cowpens in South Carolina.  The Patriots were led by General Daniel Morgan whose battle plan was reminiscent of Hannibal's masterful victory over the Romans at Cannae.

The Col James Wood II Chapter commemorated Morgan's victory at his tomb in Mount Hebron Cemetery, though the ceremony was moved inside the cemetery's chapel due to the cold weather.

Vice President Mark Crain presented the chapter wreath and Chaplain John Kuvakas gave the benediction.  Mark was joined by Bill Schwetke in participating in the Color Guard.

This evening the CMM held our Annual Meeting for 2025 which was attended by 21 people including one new member, three prospective members, and four DAR members. Compatriot Doug Schwetke, who lives in Fort Worth, TX, joined us by Zoom. We normally install newly elected officers at the annual meeting, but since we have started two year terms there were no new officers to install this year; however there will be next year, let us know if you would like to run for office for 2026-2028.

We did induct a new member, Jason L. Quintern, Ph.D.  He was joined by his family for the ceremony.  Jason recently received a Doctorate in Bible Exposition.  We are very pleased to welcome Jason and his family as fellow patriots.

We were also especially blessed with an excellent presentation on Religion in the American Revolution by Pastor Dan Carlton of Culpeper Baptist Church.  His church was formed in 1774 and its members played a prominent roll in our struggle of independence.  The CMM presented Pastor Carlton with a Certificate of Appreciation, an America 250 lapel pin, and a modest honorarium for his presentation.

Among significant decisions reached in the business session during the meeting were:
  • Commitment to support the Fauquier Court House Chapter DAR by becoming a cosponsor of their marking of the grave of Charles Lee in Warrenton Cemetery.  This includes financial and and physical contributions.
  • Changing the March Meeting Date to 25 Mar 2025.
  • Committing $200 to a marker for Culpeper Minute-Man Phillip Slaughter in Indiana.

Also of note was the excellent support from Pepper's Grill for our dinner, especially from our dedicated waitress, Diamond.

This morning Bill Schwetke participated in the monthly program that the Col James Wood II Chapter presents to two groups at Commonwealth Senior Living in Front Royal.  This morning's program was on the life and contributions of Col James Wood II to the American Revolution.  This was particularly well received as Col Wood was local to them.  As usual it was a delight to interact with the residents of Commonwealth.
