18-19 Jul 2024 Alexandria, VA At various ceremonies over a three day period the 250th Anniversary of the Fairfax Resolves was honored. The CMM was represented at three of the events, including the main event at Market Square, by Doug and Bill Schwetke, both of whom marched in the Color Guard. Bill presented the chapter wreath at Pohick and Christ Churches.

11-16 July 2024 Lancaster, PA The 134th Annual Sons of the American Revolution Congress is completed. Daryl Addington is our President General and the list of general officers include two Virginians, Secretary General Mike Elston and Historian General Jeff Thomas. Doug and Bill Schwetke represented the Culpeper Minutemen Chapter, though actually Bill was a delegate for France and was reelected Alternate Trustee representing France. Bill is a dual member of the French Society. Both Doug and Bill participated in the Color Guard at various occasions during the Congress. The highlight for the Culpeper Minutemen Chapter was the selection of our chapter's Youth Poster winner as the national winner! Congratulations to Jocelyn Wilson and her parents Dr JoDell Wilson and Compatriot Michael Wilson. Virginia had the largest delegation at the Congress, making up 8% of all the delegates attending. The social highlight for Virginian's was a Virginia Dinner at Largos Greek Restaurant attended by most of the delegates and family members in attendance. John C. "Jake" Lay passed away of July 14th. He was a member of the Culpeper Minutemen Chapter from 2002 to 2019 and was our chapter secretary from 2009 to 2017. Two of his brothers were chapter presidents Dominic (2007) and Francis (2009). On July 16, 2024, John Carbery “Jake” Lay passed away at home in Ashburn Virginia at the age of 89. Jake was born in Washington DC to the late Wolcott Edward Lay and Harriet Harmon Deems Lay, who were residing in Arlington Virginia at the time. Jake was the sixth of eight children. He was preceded in death by his brothers Wolcott Jr “Ted” (Betty Jeananne), Richard (Laura), Daniel (Anne Marie, Belmar), Francis (Carlyn), Dominic (Dorothy “Dotty”), and sister, Dorothy “Sue”, and survives his youngest brother Donald (Virginia).
Jake met his wife of 64+ years, Elizabeth Ann “Betsy” Corley, as the younger sister of one of his best friends. Together they had four children and enjoyed the love of travel, exploring the world with family, friends, and the Credit Union. When not working, traveling or volunteering, Jake enjoyed gardening, genealogy, black-and-white photography, and coin collecting. With a love of God and Country, Jake served three years in the military, he then started his civilian career as a surveyor/cartographer for Fairfax County holding various positions over his 30+ year career to Director of Mapping with the county. While working his 9-5 job Jake continued to proudly serve his country in the United States Army Reserves. His 42 years of service culminated in achieving the rank of Command Sergeant Major and being awarded the Legion of Merit. Jake had a passion for the Credit Union movement, volunteering for the Fairfax County Employees Credit Union for over 50 years of which 39 were as Chairman of the Board. His primary focus was promoting the Credit Union movement and education; locally, statewide, nationally, and globally. He leaves the legacy of a scholarship with his name for future education. Jake is survived by his wife, Betsy; his children, Alesia Starnes Daley, (Matt [deceased], Kevin), Denise Lade (Ian), Michael John (Pamela), Cheryl Powell (Kevin); seven grandchildren, Sean Starnes (Telena), Samantha Moore (Andrew), Brianna Merrill, Trevor Starnes, Jacob Lade, Cecelia Sanders (Jonathan), and Benjamin Lay; in addition his great grandchildren, Evea Starnes and Seth Butler, Noah and Brady Merrill, and Olivia and Emma Sanders. And numerous family members including nieces, nephews, grand and great grand nieces and nephews, and cousins. Visitation will be from 5-8pm on Monday, July 22, 2024, at Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon Virginia. Funeral Mass service to be held on July 23, 2024, at 10:30 am, at Saint Theresa’s Catholic Church in Ashburn, Virginia with a viewing to proceed starting at 10 am. Reception to follow at 12:30pm at a to be determined location. Burial to follow at a later date at the Lay Family Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Parkinsons Foundation Ashburn (Parkinsons.org), NextMark's Jake Lay Scholarship Fund, or a charity of your choice. Jerry Hubbard, who was our chapter president 2005-06 and 2017-18 passed away yesterday, July 13th. Details of the family's plans for a memorial service will be provided when they are available. Please keep Shirley and the Hubbard Family in your prayers. Donnel Jerome (Jerry) Hubbard, age 79, was called home to God on July 13th, 2024. He was born January 12, 1945 in Sacramento, California. Jerry was the son of Donald Philip and Lucy Lillian Campbell Hubbard.
Jerry graduated from Boring Grade School in 1958. Upon graduating from Sandy Union High School in Sandy, Oregon, in 1962, Jerry joined the United States Army, serving in the Army Security Agency and was stationed in Okinawa. After his separation from military service in 1965, Jerry accepted a position with the Central Intelligence Agency in 1966 as a Communication Officer (CT/C). Jerry served in various positions until he retired in 1995 with 29 years of service. In 1967, Jerry married the love of his life, Shirley Elaine Irwin. Together they raised a son and daughter. Jerry is survived by his wife Shirley; son Christopher of Brisbane, Australia; and daughter, Dr. Carmen D. Booker and son-in-law, James Lloyd Booker Jr. of Laurel, Maryland. He leaves behind five grandchildren: Jasmine, Leah, and Kaia Booker and Liam and Ainsley Hubbard. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Philip Hubbard and his mother Lucy Lillian Campbell Hubbard. He is survived by six sisters: Luree, Celie, Jane, Rose, Debra, and Heather, as well as many other loving family members. Jerry was interested in genealogy and was a member of several heritage societies including First Families of Connecticut, Order of Founder and Patriots of America, Sons of the American Revolution, Sons of the Revolution and Colonial Wars. Jerry was also a member of the American Legion. Funeral and memorial service will be held at a later date. 13 Jul 2024 Tappahannock, VA On 09 July 1774 the citizens of Essex County adopted resolves expressing their concerns about excesses by the British Parliament at the expense of the North American Colonies. This expression of concern for the rights of North American British citizens was celebrated in Tappahannock, VA this Saturday. The CMM were represented by Charles Jameson and Michael Dennis who both participated in the Color Guard.
07 Jul 2024 Culpeper, VA The CMM teamed today with the Museum of Culpeper History to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the Culpeper Resolves. President was the Master of Ceremonies for the program which included a reading of the Culpeper Resolves at the museum and a procession to Main Street to unveil a plaque at the site of the original Court House stood and where the resolves were adopted by the citizens of Culpeper.
04 Jul 2024 Culpeper, VA The Culpeper Minutemen Chapter hosted a ceremony celebrating the 248th Anniversary of our independence today. Charles Jameson was the master of ceremonies, and many members of the chapter played a role. In addition to the Culpeper Minutemen Chapter participants included the Culpaper Minute Men Chapter DAR, Fauquier Court House Chapter DAR, Col James Wood II Chapter SAR, Col William Grayson Chapter SAR, and VFW Post 2524.
04 Jul 2024 Washington's Mount Vernon 04 Jul 2024 Mount Vernon Doug and Bill Schwetke represented the CMM at the Independence Day Celebration at George Washington's Mount Vernon. Bill carried the National Colors and Doug carried the America 250 Flag. The event started with a march up the Bowling Green and then down to the Grove by the Tomb.
