Because of these awards and my awareness of some of what you, our chapter members, are doing, this is a great time to reflect upon service to the community. Compatriots such as Lon Lacey, Len Cowherd, Jim Bayne, Gar Schulin, and Jerry Hubbard are active in so much more than the SAR and give so much to the community. They and others such as Bob Bowen, Mike Lyman and Lance Lyngar give so much to the SAR at levels above the chapter. Many of you also have, or have had distinguished careers in service to our country in the space program, government, law enforcement, the military, and in service to your fellow man. The Culpeper Minutemen are truly blessed by the caliber of men who serve in our ranks.
As I reflect on your contributions and accomplishments, one name stands out as the man who was always there, always doing his part and more. The man whose picture I chose to use to illustrate "service" when I earlier wrote about the need for new CMM officers. The man we will honor this month, as we mark his grave so that all will know that he was one of us, and we will remember what he meant to us: Francis Lay.
Francis comes from a distinguished family. His patriot ancestor, Asa Lay, was a remarkable patriot, serving from almost the first day of our struggle for independence to the last. Asa Lay was personally known to General Washington who fondly remembered Asa to others later in the general's life. General Washington remembered Asa Lay for his service, his bravery, and his ability. Francis' modern family includes many of our hardest working compatriots. The Lay Family was and is a very important part of the Culpeper Minutemen Chapter. This month we remember our friend and what he meant to us, and aspire to be more like him.
Your Servant,
Bill Schwetke, President
