23 Nov 2019 Syria, VA The Culpeper Minutemen gathered in the Blue Ridge Mountains at the DuCard Winery for their annual Chapter Awards Meeting today. Eleven compatriots were joined by five wives, four of whom were DAR members. President Tom Hamill was unable to attend, but Vice President Charles Jameson ably led the Culpeper Minutemen in the meeting. The CMM also announced the nominations for its 2020 officers and the announced slate was elected by acclamation. The 2020 officers will be installed at the January Chapter Meeting. 2020 Chapter Officers

16 Nov 2019 Salem, VA As Virginia SAR 1st Vice President, past CMM President Bill Schwetke represented the Virginia SAR and the Culpeper Minutemen Chapter at the grave marking of two patriots at Walton Cemetery at Green Hill in Salem, VA. Bill also participated in the Color Guard. Walton Family George Walton and his wife Elizabeth, prior to the middle of the 18th century, emigrated from England to America and settled in the Colony of Georgia, where their children were issued: William b. 1749, George b. 1755 and John b. 1758. William, the eldest son, removed from Georgia, first to Prince Edward County, thence to Bedford County, then to Botetourt County, Virginia in 1773. George was lost at sea. John was unmarried and lived with his brother, William (Leftwich-Turner Families of Virginia p.24).
Between 1774 and 1776 William Walton built a dwelling a dwelling here on the southside of the Roanoke River. After his 1778 marriage to Mary Leftwich, daughter of Lt. Col. William and Elizabeth Haynes Leftwich of Bedford County, Virginia, he entered an active life in the Botetourt County community by becoming a Justice of the Peace in 1780 and the 2nd Lt. of John Lewis’ s Company (Worrell p. 437). On 8th March 1785, he was promoted to the rank of Captain. From 1780 to 1800 he regularly listed his company’s tithes (Blair p. 1). Mary Leftwich Walton carried a substantial of indentured servants to her new home on the Roanoke as a part of her dowry. Eight (8) children were issued to William and Mary Leftwich Walton: a son, William Leftwich Walton and seven (7) daughters. These daughters married men of influential families. Elizabeth Walton married Edmund Sherman, Mary Walton married Captain Walter Otey, Sarah Walton married John Leftwich, son of General Joel Leftwich, Lucy Walton married John McClanahan, nephew of Alexander McClanahan who commanded a company at the celebrated battle of Point Pleasant, Lucinda Walton married Captain Alexander Blaine, Ann George Walton married James Mitchell, Maria Walton married Dr. Andrew Lewis, grandson of General Andrew Lewis and Malinda Walton married Captain Robert Craig. John B. Walton served as a Private in the Bedford County Militia. He provided four (4) diets or meals and a peck of corn to Christopher Irvine’s Commissary. These provisions were impressed to furnish supplies to the Revolutionary Army per public claim dated May 27, 1782 (Bedford County, Virginia Order 1774 -1782 p. 341); National Society of the DAR Senate Documents 1900 – 1974 Vol.4 Year 1973 Serial # 93 Senate Doc. 113). John Walton died in his seventy – seventh year leaving his estate to the children of his brother, William Walton (Leftwich-Turner Families of Virginia p. 24). 11 Nov 2019 Culpeper, VA Veterans Day was celebrated at Culpeper National Cemetery today with a crowd of about two hundred in attendance. CMM member Keith Price was the keynote speaker and CMM President Tom Hamill presented the chapter wreath. CMM Color Guard Commander led the five man Color Guard. The Color Guard consisted of Commander Michael Dennis, Vern Eubanks from the Fairfax Resolves Chapter, Tom Hamill, Charles Jameson, and Bill Schwetke. 11 Nov 2019 Fort Worth, TX CMM member Doug Schwetke participated in the Color Guard on a trailer for the Forth Worth, TX Veterans Day Parade. The Color Guard and DAR ladies braved temperatures plunging to 25° with winds gusting to 50mph.
9 Nov 2019 Alexandria, VA This Saturday evening the Virginia Society honored retired Army General Gordon R. Sullivan with the SAR Gold Good Citizenship Medal. The Culpeper Minutemen Chapter was represented by Bill Schwetke and dual members Pat Kelly and Jeff Thomas.
9 Nov 2019 Purcellville, VA The Colonel James Wood II Chapter marked the grave of Patriot Ezekiel Potts this Saturday in Purcellville, VA. Vice President Charles Jameson led the Culpeper Minutemen participation and presented the chapter wreath. Four CMM members participated, all marching in the Color Guard, Charles Jameson, Michael Dennis, and dual members Dale Corey and Marc Robinson.
9 Nov 2019 King George, VA Today Bill & Cat Schwetke traveled to King George, VA, to present "The Origins of the SAR/DAR/C.A.R. " talk to the Leedstown Resolutions Chapter of the DAR in King George, VA. Fifteen DAR daughters attended the presentation.
8 Nov 2019 Warsaw, VA It was a cold and blustery day in Warsaw, VA on Friday, when the James Monroe Chapter markde the grave of Captain Peter Northern of the Continental Line. Past CMM President Bill Schwetke represented both the Virginia Society and the Culpeper Minutemen Chapter, presenting wreaths for both at the ceremony. Dual member Pat Kelly also participated in the ceremony. 2 Nov 2019 Warrenton, VA On Saturday, November 2nd, the Culpeper Minutemen Chapter and the Fauquier Court House Chapter, DAR, co-hosted a Genealogy Workshop for the public at Warrenton Presbyterian Church. The workshop featured nine presentations on various genealogy topics, including a lunch time presentation by our keynote speaker, former NSSAR Foundation President and former President General Joseph W. Dooley. Breakfast and lunch were also included in the workshop, which was free to the public. Nine sessions were offered including: Court Records No Vital Records? What Now? Researching the Internet African American Resources & Research Who were the Parents of Elizabeth Terhune? Daughters of the American Revolution Sons of the American Revolution DNA - Interpreting Your Results Organizing Your Research Culpeper Minutemen Chapter volunteers included President Tom Hamill, Vice President Charles Jameson, Ric Jenkins, and Bill Schwetke. Tom Hamill and Bill Schwetke also presented three of the nine lectures.
During the lunch break, the Culpeper Minutemen made a special presentation of the SAR Bronze Good Citizenship Medal to Deputy Chris Corbin of the Fauquier Sheriff's Department for his service to the community above and beyond his service in law enforcement. Also during the lunch break raffle tickets were drawn for prizes from our sponsors, with several happy winners. Many thanks to our sponsors.
