242 years ago today the Continental Congress was in session in the Senate Chamber of the Maryland Capital in Annapolis.  At 12:00 noon General Washington entered the chamber and was permitted to address the Congress.  He stated that he was resigning the commission given him by this same Congress over eight years earlier.  This historic act by Washington established the American concept of civilian control of the military.  His remarks are considered by many as the fourth of our founding documents.
The ceremony today was organized by the Maryland SAR and conducted with suitable dignity.  CMM dual member and Virginia SAR 2nd Vice President Ken Bonner was exceptional in portraying General Washington in this emotional reenactment.  The CMM was represented Thomas Jefferson in the reenactment and Cat Schwetke portrayed on of the ladies in the gallery in 18 century attire.  Two dual chapter members had prominent rolls, Historian General Jeff Thomas as Congress Secretary Charles Thomson and Vice President General (IT) Ken Bonner as General George Washington.  The venue this year is the New Senate Chamber built in 1902-5; next year we hope to return the ceremony to the Old Senate Chamber where Washington actually delivered his resignati0n.

The Annual DAR/SAR Christmas Party this year was a luncheon at historic St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in downtown Culpeper hosted by the Culpeper Minutemen Chapter.  The host responsibilities rotate between our chapter,  the Culpeper Minute Men Chapter NSDAR and the Fauquier Court House Chapter DAR.  Our Vice President Mark Crain was the Master of Ceremonies and the Color Guard included Eddie Daniel (new member participating in his first Color Guard event), Rex Hancock, Charles Jameson, Chaplain John Kuvakas, and Bill Schwetke.

The meal was a buffet catered by Pepper's Grill and the program included a Yule Never Guess Christmas Quiz run by Cat Schwetke and a White Elephant Gift Exchange with oversight from the "Queen White Elephant" (a small stuffed toy).

250th Anniversary of the Battle of Great Bridge

The Color Guard, formed from members of three chapters, present the colors at the Minute Battalion Monument in Yowell Meadow Park at day break, 250 year after the Culpeper Minutemen engaged the British at Great Bridge and won a critical victory. Left to right: Bill Schwetke, Jim Cordes (FFR Chapter), Michael Dennis who is carrying a replica of the flag that his ancestor carried, Chip Daniel (dual member of CMM and member of CJWII), and behind them Chaplain John Kuvakas.
It was in the low 20's, at dawn, the sun was not yet breaking the horizon, similar to conditions at the south end of the Great Bridge 250 years ago at about the same instant, that members of four SAR chapters gathered to present their respects to the Culpeper Minute-men and other Virginia patriots who engaged battle hardened British regulars and decisively defeated them at the Battle of Great Bridge.  This denied the British control of Virginia and though it did not win the American Revolution, in certainly saved it.
Five wreaths were presented, one each for the Virginia SAR, the Culpeper Minutemen Chapter, the Col. James Woods II Chapter, the Fairfax Resolves Chapter, and a special wreath for the descendants of Culpeper Minute-men who fought at Great Bridge.  Seven Color Guardsmen participated in presenting the colors and firing a musket salute.
We were specially honored by the participation of two compatriots who presented the Descendant's Wreath, Michael Dennis and Charles Jameson, whose ancestor, David Jameson, carried the original Culpeper Minute Battalion Battle Flag.  Michael Dennis honored his ancestor by carrying our replica of that flag in our Color Guard.

250th Anniversary of the Battle of Great Bridge

Today the SAR, DAR, C.A.R., and the City of Chesapeake celebrated the 250th Anniversary of the Battle of Great Bridge where Virginians, including the Culpeper Minute Battalion defeated the British and saved the American Revolution which would have surly failed if the British had gained control of Virginia.  This success was also saved by the heroic efforts of a single sentry, William Flora, a free black man.
The CMM were represented by Honorary President Charles Jameson who presented the chapter wreath, Michael Dennis who carried the Culpeper Minute Battalion Flag that was carried by his (and Charles Jameson's) ancestor David Jameson in the battle, Chaplain John Kuvakas who gave the Benediction, and Bill Schwetke who commanded the musket firing detail.
