Nine members and three wives of the Culpeper Minutemen Chapter gathered this morning to honor the young men who answered the call of Patrick Henry to "..give me liberty, or give me death!" and near this spot mustered to form the Culpeper Minute Men in the Fall of 1775.  The young men of Culpeper, Fauquier, and Orange Counties filled out ten companies of the Minute Men Battalion and marched off to Williamsburg, then eventually the Battle of Great Bridge.
Annually, on the Saturday closest to Flag Day, the CMM muster at this memorial to honor them, and read the names of a dozen, with what is known about them and their patriotic service.  Today nine compatriots and four wives joined the ceremony.
The Color Guard posted the colors, we recited the Pledge of Allegiance and the SAR Pledge, then called the roll.  Past President Gar Schulin, as master of ceremonies, called the roll, Chaplain Len Cowherd rang the bell, then the readers, Jim Lillard, Past President Jerry Hubbard, and Past Virginia SAR President Jim Bayne, told us about each of the honored Minute Men.
Next wreaths were presented, Jerry Hubbard presenting for the CMM, Regent Mary Ann Cowherd presenting for the CMM/DAR, and Librarian Cat Schwetke presenting for the FCHC/DAR.  Don Jennings and Lance Lyngar provided an escort of musket men for each presenter.

My 5th great grandfather was Private William Rice. I am so happy to see that there is a memorial for these men. I have found some great info about he and his wife and family and also his time in the service. Here is a good start for anyone interested:
http://revwarapps.org/w5695.pdf (copy and paste link into the search bar) I was thrilled to discover he was an original Minutemen. He was by honest accounts a strong willed , determined , proud man. I have read true fascinating accounts of his time in the service/war. Times were tough for many people at that time an d he endured through those times very bravely. I am not trying to make this seem overly patriotic or cheesy. By all accounts this is the truth . My thanks to all who have kept the memory of these men alive and thanks to those who erected the memorial. William Rice was and his comrades were true patriots. ♥

William Rice was my GGGGrandfather. He was in the American Revolution, and I think likely in Culpep s Minutemen. Do you have any documents supporting this?

My 5th Great Grandfather was-John Dunlap Brown
BIRTH 15 Oct 1759
Rapidan, Culpeper County, Virginia, USA
DEATH 31 Dec 1834 (aged 75)
Culpeper County, Virginia, USA. I read where some family records have him in the Minutemen also. But I've tried in vain to locate a pic of him or Mt Pony Cemetery where some say he was buried? DNA test confirmed. But new to old research like this...

My 10th great is Lt. William White enlisted in militia from orange county Virginia. I read many men from orange county were part of the Culpeper minute men. William was born 1698 in Cavan, Ulster Ireland, and died in 1787, 88 years of age. This means he was 76 years old in 1775. He enlisted with his son, Lieutenant Corporal Richard White (born 1716) And grandson Lt. Samuel Richard White (born 1751). All of orange county. This is all the info on them I could find. -Dylan White, of Bryant Alabama.
