Passing of Compatriot John C. "Jake" Lay

     John C. "Jake" Lay passed away of July 14th.  He was a member of the Culpeper Minutemen Chapter from 2002 to 2019 and was our chapter secretary from 2009 to 2017. Two of his brothers were chapter presidents Dominic (2007) and Francis (2009).

     On July 16, 2024, John Carbery “Jake” Lay passed away at home in Ashburn Virginia at the age of 89. Jake was born in Washington DC to the late Wolcott Edward Lay and Harriet Harmon Deems Lay, who were residing in Arlington Virginia at the time. Jake was the sixth of eight children. He was preceded in death by his brothers Wolcott Jr “Ted” (Betty Jeananne), Richard (Laura), Daniel (Anne Marie, Belmar), Francis (Carlyn), Dominic (Dorothy “Dotty”), and sister, Dorothy “Sue”, and survives his youngest brother Donald (Virginia).

    Jake met his wife of 64+ years, Elizabeth Ann “Betsy” Corley, as the younger sister of one of his best friends. Together they had four children and enjoyed the love of travel, exploring the world with family, friends, and the Credit Union. When not working, traveling or volunteering, Jake enjoyed gardening, genealogy, black-and-white photography, and coin collecting.

     With a love of God and Country, Jake served three years in the military, he then started his civilian career as a surveyor/cartographer for Fairfax County holding various positions over his 30+ year career to Director of Mapping with the county. While working his 9-5 job Jake continued to proudly serve his country in the United States Army Reserves. His 42 years of service culminated in achieving the rank of Command Sergeant Major and being awarded the Legion of Merit.

     Jake had a passion for the Credit Union movement, volunteering for the Fairfax County Employees Credit Union for over 50 years of which 39 were as Chairman of the Board. His primary focus was promoting the Credit Union movement and education; locally, statewide, nationally, and globally. He leaves the legacy of a scholarship with his name for future education.

     Jake is survived by his wife, Betsy; his children, Alesia Starnes Daley, (Matt [deceased], Kevin), Denise Lade (Ian), Michael John (Pamela), Cheryl Powell (Kevin); seven grandchildren, Sean Starnes (Telena), Samantha Moore (Andrew), Brianna Merrill, Trevor Starnes, Jacob Lade, Cecelia Sanders (Jonathan), and Benjamin Lay; in addition his great grandchildren, Evea Starnes and Seth Butler, Noah and Brady Merrill, and Olivia and Emma Sanders. And numerous family members including nieces, nephews, grand and great grand nieces and nephews, and cousins.

     Visitation will be from 5-8pm on Monday, July 22, 2024, at Adams-Green Funeral Home in Herndon Virginia.

     Funeral Mass service to be held on July 23, 2024, at 10:30 am, at Saint Theresa’s Catholic Church in Ashburn, Virginia with a viewing to proceed starting at 10 am.

     Reception to follow at 12:30pm at a to be determined location.

     Burial to follow at a later date at the Lay Family Cemetery.

     In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Parkinsons Foundation Ashburn (Parkinsons.org), NextMark's Jake Lay Scholarship Fund, or a charity of your choice.
