Former CMM Member WIlliam O. Hill Dies

     William O. Hill, a former member of the CMM whose membership lapsed a few years ago, but is known to some of us, died on Tuesday, April 28th.

William O. "Billy" HillWilliam O. "Billy" Hill, long-time postmaster of Brandy Station, Va., born September 14,. 1926, died on Tuesday, April 28, 2015, at the age of 88.Billy attended Forest Park High School and Strayer Business College, both of Baltimore, Md., prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army on New Year's Day, 1944 during World War II. He served in the 24th Infantry Division, and was shipped to the Philippines at the end of the war, where he worked as a military postmaster and attended the University of the Philippines until his discharge in December, 1946.Returning to his family's home in Brandy Station, he met Ruth "Sis" Floyd, beginning a romance that that led to their marriage in October, 1948. Their devotion and love for each other was an inspiration for their family until they were separated by death after 64 years of marriage.Billy lived a life of community service, and was well-known in Brandy Station as the postmaster from 1947 until his retirement in 1983. He was the Postmaster of the Year for the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1973, the year that he also served as the president of the Virginia branch of the National League of Postmasters. Billy was a charter member of the Brandy Station Volunteer Fire Company, which was organized in 1951. He served as a director of the BSVFD from 1970 to 1976.Billy was a Master Mason, member of the Stevens Lodge No. 169, A.F.&A.M., and was a former commander of the Adjutant Camp 1311, Culpeper, of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. He was also a life member of National Rifle Association, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2425, and a life member of the American Legion Post 330.Billy was preceded in death by his father, William Oscar Hill; his mother, Pearle Cornelia (May) Hill; and his wife, Ruth "Sis" Floyd Hill. He is survived by many loving cousins.The family would like to thank the staff of Gordon House at Gordonsville, Va. and the nurses and staff at Hospice of the Piedmont for the wonderful care given Billy during his illness.Funeral services will be held Monday, May 4, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel at Clore-English Funeral Home with interment immediately following the service in Culpeper Masonic Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service time.In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to Brandy Station Volunteer Fire Department, 19601 Church Road, Brandy Station, VA 22714 or to Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, Virginia 22911.Condolences may be given at clore-english.com.
