The Culpeper Minutemen held their January 2019 meeting at the Prince Michel Winery in Leon Virginia.  VASSAR President Pat Kelly was in attendance to install the Chapter Officers for 2019.  The slate of Chapter officers for 2019 are as follows:
President: Tom Hamill
1st Vice President: Charles Jameson
2nd Vice President: Vacant
Secretary: Vacant
Treasurer: Bill Mutziger
Registrar: Tom Hamill
Historian: Jack Lynch
Chaplain: Len Cowherd

The Chapter also inducted Compatriot Jeff Stehm.  Compatriot Stehm's patriot ancestor is Pelitiah Liscum - who joined the Massachusetts Militia in 1782.  While he was too late to see any fighting in the Revolutionary War, he would give his life for this country at Sackett's Harbor, NY during the War of 1812.  We welcome Compatriot Stehm into our ranks.

VASSAR President Pat Kelly also presented his research on the Settlers and Indians of Southwest Virginia, and how the battles between them starting in 1773 built a disciplined frontier fighting force which helped win the Revolutionary War in the South.

The Chapter is blessed to receive a new Culpeper Minutemen Battle Flag thanks to a generous gift from Past President Bill Schwetke and his wife Cat.  The color scheme is our best estimate of how the original battle flag looked based on historic descriptions.

A couple of general items for Culpeper Minutemen Members - We received a new shipment of Culpeper Minutemen lapel pins.  These more closely resemble the shape and color of the original Battle Flag than the old pins.  Anyone wanting a new pin - the cost is $2.  If you would like to exchange your old pin for a new pin - then the price is free.

We are still collecting donations to join the Great Bridge Battlefield and Waterways 1775 Society.  We are currently 42% of the way to our goal of $1775.  Please consider giving to this special collection.

This evening the Culpeper Town Council unanimously approved the Culpeper Minutemen Memorial for Yowell Meadow Park.  This was the last hurdle, and now the construction will begin with the expectation that we will hold a dedication ceremony in September of this year.  This was the result of a lot of hard work by compatriots Lon Lacey, Ben Works (who also served on the Culpeper Parks and Recreation Commission), Keith Price (who also serves on the Culpeper City Council), and members of the Culpepr Town Staff, notably Salem Bush, Jim Hoy and Charles Rapp.  President Tom Hamill and past President Bill Schwetke attended the session.

The CMM Board of Managers met at Pepper's Grill in Culpeper on Saturday morning, Jan 5th.  In attendance were President Tom Hamill, Vice President Charles Jameson, Treasurer Bill Mutziger, Chaplain Len Cowherd and Color Guard Commander Mike Dennis.  The board discussed the upcoming events and dates for the Chapter, reviewed the budget and membership numbers, and discussed other activities such as the Youth Programs and planning for the 4th of July Ceremony.

Additionally, it was decided to proceeded with a call for donations from the general membership to the Great Bridge Battlefield and Waterways Foundation to their 1775 Society Membership.  This will require raising $1775 in donations.  More to come in a Chapter-wide e-mail.

Treasurer Bill Mutziger brought in a sample of one of the new Patriot grave markers for all to examine.   And President Tom Hamill brought in the supply of new Culpeper Minutemen Battle Flag pins.  It was decided that any member who would like to exchange their old pin for a new pin can do so at no cost.  Any member liking a new pin without exchange - or any non-member who would like a pin - the cost is $2 per pin.  See Bill Mutziger or Tom Hamill to get a new pin.

Finally, the BOM read the submission for the George and Stella M. Knight Essay Contest submitted by Lea Hamill from Liberty High School in Bealeton.  It was the only entry submitted for the chapter to review.  The members of the Board thought that it was well written and endorsed it as the Chapter level winner and it will be submitted for the State Level competition.
