Between 1774 and 1776 William Walton built a dwelling a dwelling here on the southside of the Roanoke River. After his 1778 marriage to Mary Leftwich, daughter of Lt. Col. William and Elizabeth Haynes Leftwich of Bedford County, Virginia, he entered an active life in the Botetourt County community by becoming a Justice of the Peace in 1780 and the 2nd Lt. of John Lewis’ s Company (Worrell p. 437). On 8th March 1785, he was promoted to the rank of Captain. From 1780 to 1800 he regularly listed his company’s tithes (Blair p. 1). Mary Leftwich Walton carried a substantial of indentured servants to her new home on the Roanoke as a part of her dowry.
Eight (8) children were issued to William and Mary Leftwich Walton: a son, William Leftwich Walton and seven (7) daughters. These daughters married men of influential families. Elizabeth Walton married Edmund Sherman, Mary Walton married Captain Walter Otey, Sarah Walton married John Leftwich, son of General Joel Leftwich, Lucy Walton married John McClanahan, nephew of Alexander McClanahan who commanded a company at the celebrated battle of Point Pleasant, Lucinda Walton married Captain Alexander Blaine, Ann George Walton married James Mitchell, Maria Walton married Dr. Andrew Lewis, grandson of General Andrew Lewis and Malinda Walton married Captain Robert Craig.
John B. Walton served as a Private in the Bedford County Militia. He provided four (4) diets or meals and a peck of corn to Christopher Irvine’s Commissary. These provisions were impressed to furnish supplies to the Revolutionary Army per public claim dated May 27, 1782 (Bedford County, Virginia Order 1774 -1782 p. 341); National Society of the DAR Senate Documents 1900 – 1974 Vol.4 Year 1973 Serial # 93 Senate Doc. 113). John Walton died in his seventy – seventh year leaving his estate to the children of his brother, William Walton (Leftwich-Turner Families of Virginia p. 24).
